Time for Mosaic Week

A multicultural thematic week with exhibitions, theater, presentations, mother language day, Orrestaare samisk market and many more.

- Mosaic Week grows every year with more and more people jumping on the wagon, says Anna-Lena Wahlberg, a deacon in the Swedish Church in Ornskoldsvik, which is one of the many organisations involved in planning mosaic week.

- More and more organisations are taking part. We also strive to get schools involved. We also aim to spread  Mosaic week out in the municipality, so that it's not just happening in the city center, but we have not really succeeded yet.

Mosaic week kick starts on Thursday, February 16 at  Missionkyrkan with the theme "The Sami - an indigenous people."  Friday sees, the opening of an exhibition of artist Gustav Klimt`s work by special class of students at Örnsköldsvik högskola (formerly Hampnäs)  which shows at Rådhuset until March 2.

Folkhögskolans theater group`s  "La Strada del Amore" by Staffan Goethe, will premiere on Saturday, February 18th. The traditional Orrestaare Sami market, continues at the Örnsköldsvik Museum & Art Gallery.

An interesting presentation on integration with Anders Lago, the former mayor of Sodertalje,  will be at Pinassen in Arken on Monday 20 February, and on Tuesday is  mother language day in Arkenbiblioteket where children and students perform with singing, music, dance and play in many different languages.

- The important thing is that Mosaic Week is about creating communities, not just for the different organisations to be seen doing something. We also need more than just a week, maybe also a place where we can meet more regularly, says mother language teacher Walburga Stumpf from Germa

Together with Örnsköldsviks Kollektiva Konstnärsverkstad and Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan organises three other african organisations – Kollektiva armen, Örnsköldsviks Afrikanska kvinnors förening and Föreningen för Afrikaner i Örnsköldsvik –an exhibition called Exodus at Galleri Lokomotiv. Exhibitors are George Anwan, Edmon Khalil and Rahwa Tesfai Ghermai.

Mosaic Week is a way to show the diversity in our community and is also part of the ongoing integration process, which is not so simple.

- We want to become integrated into the society, but we fail. We are wondering whether the  Swedish society really wants to integrate us, says Jean-Marie Vianney Ntukamazina, president of the Föreningen för Afrikaner in Örnsköldsvik.
